All About Prevention

According to the World Health Organization, drowning is the world’s leading cause of unintentional death. Between 2005 and 2014, CDC reported that non-boating related deaths resulting from unintentional drownings averaged at 3,536 annually in the United States, translating to 10 deaths per day. In 2016, WHO estimated that globally, deaths from unintentional drowning averaged at 320,000 annually.

On the other hand, the National Safety Council reported that 74% of drowning cases of children under the age of 15 years reported between 2015-2017 happened in residential areas. According to Injury Facts, more than 12% of the 3,709 drownings reported in 2017 were children between the ages of 1-4 years.

One of the water safety measures recommended by WHO is community-based measures, which include teaching basic swimming skills, water safety, and safe rescue skills. At LLB, we believe that the community will play a significant role in preventing swimming injuries, thus our focus on a community-based approach.
